TRAVEL À LA CARTE × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

TRAVEL À LA CARTE is Lisa Freeburg's luxury travel practice out of Omaha, Nebraska – “An Independent Affiliate of Cadence and a Proud Member of the invitation-only Virtuoso Network,” in her site's own words. She has spent thirty-five years and more as an advisor and still writes of waking every morning with a “zeal for travel.” What charmed us hides in the page source: a small rule that keeps every letter on her site invisible for up to three seconds, until the proper typeface has finished loading. A site willing to hold its tongue until the right letters arrive keeps a faith we recognize, and it made us curious what those letters could do in leather.

Quite a lot, it turns out. TRAVEL runs wide in a heavy black serif, and one A steps forward into its own red block, like the stamp in a well-used passport. The grave accent over the À is a small dare at tag scale. It survives the strike cleanly, though the tiny LLC line beneath softens into the grain, and we made peace with that.

The mark, as found

Pressed

Bold poppy red follows the red block in the mark, and pale gray-sand follows the quiet editorial ground of her pages. Black is the automatic third, and it carries the gold foil.

The world, served

The name is table language, so the companion sets a table. A wide serving plate holds a bold little globe, one equator and one curved meridian and nothing finer. Just above it a domed cloche hangs tilted, caught the half-second after an unseen waiter raised it. Beneath the plate, a single line borrows the site's own phrase, BY LAND AND SEA. We kept the gap between dome and globe generous; close it even slightly and the lift stops reading, the whole scene goes still. Pressed lengthwise on the same leathers.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
