Travel By Kelly × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Travel By Kelly is a travel-planning practice in Bristol, a Rhode Island harbor town where the water is never more than a few streets away. The site promises individually tailored trips, the kind where a dream gets worked into a real itinerary, and the range runs from resort weeks and cruise sailings to Europe and Africa, with Disney holding a corner of its own. The creed arrives in a rhythm we kept repeating at the bench: “dream more, travel more, live more.”

What stopped us was the preposition. A century back, the great lines papered trunks with stickers naming the conveyance, BY AIR or BY SEA, as though the how were half the story of any trip. Travel By Kelly sets a person in that slot, and once we saw it the whole study followed. The site as found speaks in destination photographs and plain two-line type, TRAVEL BY / KELLY, so we begin where the record does.

The mark this study proposes

The proposed mark is a bordered baggage sticker set portrait, the shape porters once slapped on trunk-ends. TRAVEL heads a short checklist of conveyances; air and sea wait unticked, and the checked box reads BY KELLY. We tried it landscape first, the way the old stickers ran, and it fought the tag. Upright, the list reads top to bottom like a manifest. A small joke, with a serious claim underneath – on this itinerary the conveyance is a person, and the check says the choice is already made.

Pressed

The study runs in turquoise for the Caribbean water that fills the gallery and in blush for the weddings and celebration getaways the practice plans. Black, as ever, carries the gold.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
