Travel Counsel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Travel Counsel is the Atlanta practice of Georgia Schley Ritchie and India Schley-Ritchie, mother and daughter, who plan travel the way a careful lawyer prepares a case. Georgia was born in England to a Scottish mother and an American father and grew up with one foot on either side of the Atlantic; the practice pairs those years lived abroad with a lawyer's attention to detail, and it holds that travel belongs near the center of an education. We kept returning to the name itself. Counsel is a lovely old word; it names both the friend who advises you and the advocate who stands beside you when the details matter. A name that carries its own balance asked for this study.

Finding the mark took some care. The wider web offers badges for this name, Global Travel Collection and SELECT Hotels & Resorts, and those belong to the networks the practice works with; we set them aside. The site itself speaks in plain type beneath the advisors' own names, so plain type is what we recorded first.

The mark this study proposes

A level balance scale whose two pans are drawn as matched suitcases, above TRAVEL set over COUNSEL. The scale is the oldest emblem the law owns, and this practice earns it honestly, since a lawyer's care is the promise on the door. The suitcases keep it from reading as a law office alone. Two pans held even also happen to describe a mother and daughter advising side by side, and a childhood spent with the Atlantic in the middle.

Proposed new mark for Travel Counsel

Pressed

Blueberry and gray-sand carry the pair of stories here, the deep navy of the crossing and the pale paper of a well-prepared brief. Black carries the gold. If we are honest, the fine beam of the scale asks a great deal of a deboss at this size; the render holds it, and the die will tell us the rest.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
