TravelLife Travel Co. × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

TravelLife Travel Co. is the shared venture of two friends and travel lovers, Tara Breuer of Marshfield and Leah Van Zile of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, founded on the belief that “travel should feel joyful from the very first conversation.” For Leah it answered a dream of small-business ownership after more than thirty years in corporate America spent on relationships and customer service. She calls herself the client's travel “easy button.” The agency grew on client trust and word of mouth, and it proudly serves Wisconsin and beyond; the work runs from all-inclusive weeks in Mexico and the Caribbean to European trips built to order, and from the first inquiry to the final boarding pass they say they stay by the client's side.

Their promise reads “Your Journey. Our Passion.” and the mark carries it in an actual hand. TRAVEL LIFE runs in near-black script with an oversized looping T and L, and a thin flight path rises from the letters into a small heart loop before ending at a solid little plane climbing up-right. Beneath, TRAVEL CO in widely letterspaced capitals. Handwriting is honest work for a deboss, since the pen's line and the die's line want the same things, but we frankly wondered how that heart would take a die.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Deep forest green speaks for the Northwoods country both founders come from, while cool country gray answers the mark's quiet black-and-white presentation. Black carries the gold foil. And the heart made it through the press on all of them, though at tag scale you have to lean in to find it.

The easy button

Leah's “easy button” was too good a phrase to leave on the page, so we drew one. A single arcade-style button with EASY set large across the dome, its cap pressed a hair into the plinth so that two small ticks mark the action. From the top a dashed flight path climbs to a little plane headed up and to the right, and beneath the base runs the promise in full, YOUR JOURNEY OUR PASSION. We debated threading the heart into this path as well and left it out; the heart belongs to their logo.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
