Trey Tracy Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Trey Tracy Travel is a boutique luxury travel advisory in Madison, Mississippi, and for most purposes it is one man with a phone and a long memory for routes. Trey Tracy has spent nearly a decade planning custom journeys, from Europe itineraries to Alaska sailings, with honeymoons and river cruises in between, and the person who takes your first call is the person who checks your final boarding pass. His line is “Creating a Lifetime of Memories, One Trip at a Time”, and the second half of it doubles as a working method.

What pulled us to the press was the name. Trey Tracy Travel. Three hard T’s in a row, a small drumroll before departure, and a gift to a die cutter, since a stroke that repeats three times only needs to be right once. In his mark a compact blue glyph, a T-shaped path carrying a small airplane cue, sits left of the uppercase name while an italic TRAVEL swings wide beneath. The verification badges that appear near it on his site belong to their issuers, so our die carries the wordmark alone.

Turquoise answers the bright blue strokes of the glyph, and blueberry settles a register lower, down where the italic TRAVEL lives. Black carries the gold. We had doubts about that italic at tag width, the thin joins of the final sweep especially, and the render came back cleaner than expected; we would still want a first strike on scrap before trusting it in a run.

One trip at a time

Every journey he plans ends the way journeys have always ended, with a stamp in a passport, so we drew him one. A round border carries TREY TRACY TRAVEL and ONE TRIP AT A TIME around a small airplane, and it runs portrait on the tag, the way a stamp lands on a page. It reads as a record of somewhere you actually went, which is close to what he sells.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
