Vic's Vacations × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Vic's Vacations is an Indianapolis-area travel practice run by Vic, an Indiana mother of two who plans everything from honeymoons to multigenerational reunions, and who plans each one as if it were her own. Her city has noticed. The site records four straight years of being voted Indy's Best Travel Agency, 2022 through 2025, which for a hometown award is a long stretch to stay on top.

What called us to the bench was the mark. An open black circle is crossed by a single sweeping V, its tapered right arm climbing past the rim, and a small solid wedge at the left gives the whole thing flight. A stroke that escapes its boundary is a stamp maker's pleasure, since the die gets to honor the escape. Our one worry was the sweep, because a V pressed carelessly flattens into a checkmark, and we spent real time at the proof stage making sure the taper survived the deboss.

The mark, as found

Pressed

Country gray and pale blush carry the pressing, the gray keeping that black circle direct and graphic while the blush leans toward the celebratory side of her calendar, the weddings and the honeymoons. Black takes the mark in gold.

Indy's best, four years running

A travel agency keeps its trophies on its luggage, or should. So we drew a suitcase and gave it a circle for each winning year, 2022 through 2025, stacked above the words VOTED INDYS BEST, the way a well-traveled case collects its stickers. This one runs lengthwise along the tag.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
