Wagner Bespoke Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Wagner Bespoke Travel plans journeys the way a tailor cuts cloth, to the measure of the one traveler standing in the fitting room. Their homepage says it without ornament: “We exist to curate exceptional global experiences for the ever-discerning traveler. Plan your bespoke trip today.” The practice works out of Santa Monica so far as the public record tells it, with founder and advisor Eli Wagner at the desk, and the site still opens with “A Note From Our Founder”, which is how a firm talks when one person answers for the work. The footer keeps the working papers in small honest type, “Wagner Bespoke Travel is an affiliate of Coastline Travel CST #2040360-40.” A California seller-of-travel number printed where anyone can check it is the closest thing this trade has to a maker's stamp inside the lining. We warm to people who stamp their work.

The mark earned the study on sight. A small globe rides above a serif WAGNER, and BESPOKE TRAVEL waits beneath in patient capitals. The lockup ships in white, which taught us an old lesson over again; our first proof sheet came back looking blank, and only on a dark composite did every letter and the little globe step forward. We also read the page source, an occupational habit, and found a script that checks whether a visitor's browser can divide text into proper words, quietly fetching a helper when it comes up short. Tailoring the invisible parts to the reader struck us as in character, though we grant that a polyfill is a strange place to go looking for a firm's soul.

Pressed

We pressed the lockup into blueberry, after the deep navy that grounds their travel imagery, and into gray-sand, after the pale restraint of their page ground. Black with gold foil makes the customary third, and a white mark takes to gold gracefully.

The world, made to measure

For the companion, titled THE WORLD, MADE TO MEASURE and pressed lengthwise on the same leathers, we drew a picture of the trade. A bold circle stands for the globe, holding just two meridian arcs, while a tailor's measuring tape wraps it like a sash worn at a tilt, crossing in front at the equator and curling off past the rim to a small blunt metal tip. Short ticks run along the tape's edge, every fourth a touch longer, and we left the numerals off; the measurements in this trade are personal. Beneath the globe sits one line, PLAN YOUR BESPOKE TRIP, their homepage imperative with the today left for the traveler to supply.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
