Full Weight – a St. George, Utah leather collection
An August study.
Full Weight is a leather collection for St. George, Utah – five stamps cut from the city's own material record and pressed into luggage tags and journals, among other goods from our bench.
First, the improbable fact the region still talks about: at Silver Reef, just up the road, prospectors found silver inside sandstone – a pairing the mining textbooks of the day called impossible. We seated a blank coin-round in the bedded stone and let the strata bow around it. The black tag carries the stamp in gold. The honeyed russet and pale warm greige tags take it blind.
Next, the namesake. We stacked five old nesting troy weights, the kind every honest counter once kept, above the words FULL WEIGHT. The black fob takes the stamp in gold, and the golden tan one takes it blind. It looks great pressed small.
Then, the beginning. St. George was settled in 1861 as a cotton mission, so we put an opened cotton boll and the year in the corner of the toiletry bags, where the unfoiled press on black reads as a quiet shadow relief.
After that, the tray. A catchall is where everything in your pockets converges, so we gave it the city's own convergence – three deserts meeting at a single point on the golden tan leather, with a small star marking the town where the seams touch.
And finally, the journals. The Virgin River has been keeping one longer than anyone, cutting its line a little deeper into the rock each year, so the cover's corner carries a white river writing its way down through the strata, in caramel and pale sea-blue. Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
