The Gathered Garden – Volume I-A.

A September study.

A garden celebration is built to vanish – by morning the bouquets are carried off and the arch comes down. So we pressed the flowers into leather, where a few of them get to stay.

First, we drew a pompon dahlia exactly face-on, ring after ring of pointed petals closing into a round medallion. It is the one design here that earns its silence.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather – once in vivid magenta for the bloom, once in deep green for the leaf it grew from.

Next, the send-off. We set a whole hand-tied bouquet flying across the luggage tag, blooms leading and frayed ribbons streaming behind, over the words AND AWAY WE GO. We pressed it in warm red and pale sea-blue, then once more in pale rose.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Then the journals. A peony bud, still shut tight, stands over the words EVERYTHING GROWS FROM HERE – a guest list starts on paper, and so does a garden. Once in deep green, once in dusty rose.

Then, for the wedding weekend, we gave the toiletry bags a single peony standing in a hotel water glass, with THE MORNING OF underneath. Anyone who has pinned flowers to a lapel at eight in the morning knows that glass. Blind debossed on navy and on chestnut – one for each side of the aisle.

And finally, the one we liked the most. We bent peonies and dahlias into a ring and left it open at the top, with UNTIL THE NEXT ONE resting inside – because the catchall tray is where the rings and keys land when the evening ends.
