Golden Hour – leather studies of Golden, Colorado

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.

A September study, Volume I-B.

Golden Hour is a small collection of original leather designs rooted in Golden, Colorado. Four stamps cut from the town's own material, pressed across a line of leather goods – luggage tags, journals and so on.

First, we took the welcome arch over Washington Avenue at its word – HOWDY FOLKS up top, WHERE THE WEST LIVES underneath, the whole greeting exactly as the street hangs it.

The black tag carries the letters in gold, the way the sign carries its yellow on dark brown. Golden tan and navy take the blind deboss.

Next, the two flat mountains that hold the town between them. Two tables – so we set them. TABLE FOR TWO, with the sun going down in the gap.

We pressed it small on journals in deep green and warm tan, then at full size across the golden tan catchall tray. It looks genuinely beautiful.

Then the keychains. Once a year a few thousand golden retrievers take over this town, so we drew one in a bandana and wrote the only caption it needs – A GOLDEN IN GOLDEN.

On the black fob, the golden goes down in gold; on golden tan it goes down blind.

And finally, Clear Creek – the water that started the town and still carries it every summer, feet up. We set an inner tube drifting under MEET ME AT THE CREEK, and stamped it on the toiletry bags in navy and deep brown.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
