Good Ground – a Dothan, Alabama leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume I-B.

A September study.

Good Ground is a small leather collection drawn from Dothan, Alabama – the seat of the Wiregrass, where half the peanuts in America grow within a hundred miles. Five stamps, all of them grown here.

First, we drew the grass the whole region is named for – a single tuft of wiregrass, needle-fine, sprung like a fountain – and set THE WIREGRASS beneath it. It went onto a deep green keychain and onto both toiletry bags, warm tan and deep brown.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Next, the camellia in full bloom, a honey bee just landing on the rim of a petal – Alabama's own flower, and an old Dothan garden love. We pressed it into pale rose and dusty rose leather, where it belongs.

Then, a monarch for the luggage tag, with PASSING THROUGH beneath – the great traveler of the Wiregrass murals, pressed on honeyed russet just a shade off the monarch's own orange. Each fall the eastern population heads south; this one stays.

After that, DIG DEEPER. We drew the peanut plant whole, flowers above the ground line and the crop hanging below it, because a peanut keeps its best work underground. On the cover of a deep brown journal it reads as an instruction.

And finally, the one we liked the most. One peanut standing at the center of a surveyor's hundred-mile ring, because half the peanuts in America grow within a hundred miles of Dothan. It looks genuinely beautiful pressed into the golden tan tray, and again on a warm tan luggage tag.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
