Long Walks – a Longfellow, Minneapolis leather collection

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A September study.

This is Long Walks, Volume I-A of the Practice Log – a leather collection for Longfellow, Minneapolis, the neighborhood that takes its daily walks between the river gorge and the falls. We pressed its landscapes into leather – forest green for the savanna, pale sea-blue for the water.

First, the oak savanna above the gorge. We set one bur oak – the whole broad, irregular crown – over a band of tall grass and prairie flowers, and wrote LONGFELLOW beneath it. It looks genuinely beautiful on the journals, in forest green and in lilac, and at full size across the golden tan tray.

Next, the river itself. The luggage tags run lengthwise, so we ran the gorge with them – broad water between wooded banks, the arch bridge far downstream – and set MISSISSIPPI RIVER GORGE along the water. The pale sea-blue tag is the river on the river; navy and warm caramel follow it.

Then Minnehaha Falls, at the neighborhood's southern door. A keychain hangs upright, so we gave the falls the fob's whole height – one unbroken sheet of water off the limestone ledge, MINNEHAHA FALLS beneath the pool. We pressed it into navy and into pale greige, the color of that limestone.

And finally, the toiletry bag, the one thing here that leaves town. We drew the walking path curving away under the trees and set TAKE THE RIVER ROAD beneath it, so the bag carries the way home in its corner. It sits in warm caramel.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
