Off the Clock – a leather stamping study of the day off

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies. Volume I-B.

A September study.

Off the Clock is a small collection about the day off. Three stamps for the man whose calendar clears when the weather turns good, pressed into leather that improves with wear the way his favorite shirt does.

First, the title piece. We drew a clock dial and let both hands fly off as one gull, breaking the rim on the way out – OFF THE CLOCK. We pressed it at full size into the golden tan catchall tray, so the watch that comes off the wrist lands squarely on its own excuse.

The same dial rides small on the weekend kit – navy over chestnut – and on a warm tan luggage tag.

Next, we ruled a little appointment card for the day itself: TODAY, then one clean tide curve carrying the only two entries – HIGH TIDE at the crest, LOW TIDE in the trough.

It runs lengthwise along a pale sea-blue luggage tag, and it sits in the corner of the journals – one pale warm greige, one navy – standing in for every appointment that would otherwise be written inside.

And finally, BACK BY DARK – a low sun on the horizon, the day's one honest deadline. We stamped it on the keychains, so the promise leaves the house with the keys.

Looks great on the honeyed russet and navy fobs, and it closes the tag set on a navy luggage tag.
