Roll Call – a leather stamping study about being counted · Volume I-C

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.

A September study – Volume I-C.

Roll Call is a small collection about being counted – the raised hand, the stroke that joins the tally. Four original stamps, pressed into leather from the journals to the luggage tags.

First, the oldest answer in the book. We raised a hand over the word PRESENT – the way you answer the roll, and the thing a journal becomes when it changes hands.

It looks genuinely beautiful in the deep wine leather, and quieter still in pale greige.

Next, we cut a tally for the keychains. Four strokes were already standing; the fifth – the one that closes the gate – is you. COUNT ME IN underneath.

On warm tan the press goes blind; on black the tally goes gold.

Then we drew the huddle from straight above – hands stacked in the middle, arms coming in like spokes – and set ALL IN under the ring. It presses big in the center of the golden tan tray, where everything lands anyway, and small in the corner of the navy toiletry bags over deep brown.

Looks great when stamped at both sizes.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A luggage tag keeps its owner's card on the back, so the front comes clean about it: ANSWERS TO THE NAME ON THE BACK, under a little turn-me-over arrow. We ran it lengthwise in navy and in warm red.

The black tag takes it in gold – absolutely gorgeous.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
