Sends Well – a leather stamping collection of parcels and postmarks

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

Volume I-B. A September study.

Sends Well is a small leather collection about the old ceremony of sending – the tied parcel and the pressed postmark. Four stamps, carried across leather from luggage tag to journal.

First, we tied a heart up like a parcel – twine crossed, a small knot where the lines meet – with the one instruction every parcel deserves beneath it: HANDLE WITH CARE. The black tag carries the gold. The keychain in warm amber and the toiletry bag take it as a blind press.

Next, we cut a postmark of our own. SENT WITH LOVE arcs over the crown, FIRST CLASS closes the ring, and in the middle a heart takes the cancellation lines the way a stamp takes its proof of travel.

Then, a postage stamp for anyone who still drafts by hand – a quill above WORTH THE POSTAGE, and a heart in the corner where the denomination goes. A journal is where the letter is written before it is sent, so the journals wear it first, in deep wine and in pale greige, with a warm tan tag alongside.

And finally, the mark every box wears. Two arrows over a baseline, THIS SIDE UP beneath – pressed into the catchall tray, the one object in the house that is permanently right side up.
