The Home Place – a Jennings, Louisiana leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies in original leather design.
A September study – Volume I-D.
The Home Place – a gift collection cut for Jennings, Louisiana, and pressed into leather. Gourd and fig, satsuma and growing rings – four designs from the yard.
First, we hung a birdhouse gourd from its branch and set a small wren at the door, with WELCOME HOME arched underneath – a housewarming the bird agrees with.
On the golden tan tray it waits by the front door, where the new keys land.
The black luggage tag carries the design in gold.
And on the toiletry bag – honeyed russet over chestnut – the welcome rides home from every trip.
Next, we stood a fig cutting in a jar of water, roots just starting, and wrote PASS IT ON – the way a good fig gets around here, one yard at a time.
On the keychains – pale sea-blue and chestnut – the jar passes from hand to hand, which is the point.
Then we drew the satsuma as the sun it stands in for – WINTER SUN, the dooryard citrus that ripens when the year goes cold.
Looks great when stamped onto the golden tan.
And finally, the one we liked the most. Growth rings with a fresh shoot rising from the center – STILL GROWING. It fits a birthday as well as it fits a retirement.
The journals wear it in the corner – deep green and warm tan – while next season gets planned inside.
And a deep green tag, for the gardener who travels anyway.
