The Marginalia Collection × Leatherius Woodman – a Sarasota leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.

A September study. Volume I-D.

The Marginalia Collection – four stamps we designed for the readers of Sarasota, and pressed into leather.

First, the lie every reader tells at bedtime. We drew a candle burned down to its last inch, still lit, and set it over the words ONE MORE CHAPTER.

It went into the corner of the journals – one in navy, one in deep wine. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

The same stamp rides the corner of the wash bag, navy over chestnut, for the reader who packs.

Next, one for the banned shelf. We drew a closed book whose ribbon bookmark runs out into a lit fuse, and set READ DANGEROUSLY beneath it.

It went onto the keychains, in warm red and in black. The black one carries the stamp in gold.

Then, the tree. A banyan roofs half a block and drops its roots like columns; under ours we leaned a small open book, and beneath the ground line set SHADE ENOUGH TO READ BY.

The tags stand upright. Deep green wears the canopy's own color, golden tan the afternoon it keeps off; a third went to pale sea-blue, for the bay.

And finally, the mark the collection is named for. In old margins a small pointing hand, the manicule, flagged the passage worth keeping; we set it at generous size across the base of the golden tan tray, pointing at the words WORTH KEEPING, so the tray says it about whatever lands there at night.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
