The Trained Eye – a leather stamping study of dovetail joints and maker's marks

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

A September study – Volume II.

The Trained Eye – a small collection about how good things are known. Anyone who has spent an afternoon among old furniture learns the tells: the joint that holds without nails, and the mark hiding on the underside. We pressed those tells into leather.

First, the oldest proof in the workshop. We drew a through dovetail the way the old manual plates drew it – two boards caught the instant before they lock – and set HOLDS WITHOUT NAILS beneath. The joint runs the long way down the tag.

The black tag carries it in gold.

Next, we drew a chevroned drawer handle of the old cast kind and hung the browser's first rule beneath it: TRY EVERY DRAWER.

The black fob takes the gold pass, so the handle reads like the brass it stood in for.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then the carpenter's proverb for the corner of a journal. We opened a folding rule to a sharp angle above MEASURE TWICE – a journal is where the second measuring happens. One in deep espresso brown, one in honeyed russet.

After that, the tell you feel before you see. We set a cast scale weight over HEAVIER THAN IT LOOKS and pressed it small into the corner of the kit.

And finally, the dealer's first move. We turned a teacup over, found the mark on its foot, and arched TURN IT OVER above it – the tray is where pocket things land to be looked at properly.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
