Troy Country – a St. George, Utah leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A August study.

A small leather collection for St. George, Utah – a town that weighs gold to the thousandth of an ounce, then steps outside into a country too big to measure. We named it Troy Country.

First, the design that named the collection. We drew an assayer's balance and loaded it honestly – one troy ounce in the left pan, one mesa in the right – and set the beam dead level. On the luggage tags it runs in golden tan and deep navy. The third tag is black, and black carries the stamp in gold.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, the same balance at a generous size on the catchall tray, in golden tan – the tray where the coins and the keys land at the end of the day.

Then, Silver Reef. The geology books of the day ruled silver out of sandstone, and the reef just north of town carried it anyway. We drew the strata in section and bedded one reeded coin in the stone, as if the country had minted it. The toiletry bags stack honeyed russet over deep espresso – sandstone over canyon shadow.

Then, 1861. St. George began as the Cotton Mission – cotton planted in a desert on the plain conviction that it would grow, and it grew. One open boll for the journal cover, where the next improbable plan gets written down. One journal in gray sand, one in deep navy.

And finally, the one for the hand. People who handle coins know that honest weight announces itself before any scale gets involved. A short stack of reeded coins above the words GOOD WEIGHT – on a pale gray sand fob, and on a black fob that takes the stamp in gold.
