Understory – a stamped leather collection from the forest floor
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study – Volume I-B.
We designed a small collection for the layer of the forest where the day actually happens – boot level. We call it Understory: five stamps for people who look down when they walk and come home with full pockets.
First, TAKE THE LONG WAY. The two ends of the trail sit a thumb's width apart, and the path between them refuses every shortcut. We pressed it upright on luggage tags in deep green and caramel.

The black tag carries the gold.

Next, the honest motto of the banana slug: SLOW IS ALSO A SPEED. We gave it to the keychains, a slow companion for the pocket, in golden tan – the slug's own color – and in dark espresso.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then, STILL GROWING – a stand of mushrooms that came up overnight, pressed into the corner of the journal where things come up over years. One journal in chestnut, one in deep green.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

The toiletry bags, a black one stacked on dark espresso, take the collection's one piece of evidence: an oversized footprint in the corner, and beneath it the only verdict it supports – MAYBE.

And finally, EMPTY YOUR POCKETS – the golden tan catchall tray says what it is for, and around the words we pressed a ring of the day's haul: pinecone, acorn, feather, one good flat stone.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
If these belong on your shelves and you'd like them made real, or anything here changed – say hello through our contact page.
