Walking Distance, Volume II – a Greenville, South Carolina leather collection

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume II of our Greenville work.

An August study.

Greenville, South Carolina, pressed into leather. We call this collection WALKING DISTANCE, because downtown here keeps its good things close together – the falls a short walk from the market, the trail a short ride from both.

First, the one everybody meets first. We set the Liberty Bridge over the falls of the Reedy and wrote GREENVILLE beneath – the deck curves and hangs from one side only, the way the real one does.

Next, we sent a rabbit at full stretch over a pair of rails and set 32 MILES underneath. Anyone who has ridden out of downtown toward Travelers Rest knows exactly which trail that is.

Then BACK BY SUNDAY, for the weekend bag – three foothill ridgelines and a road slipping between them. Greenville sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and the weekend knows it.

Then we pressed the collection's own idea into the catchall tray: a dotted walking line that loops out and comes home, with a lamppost here and the little bridge there along the way. WALKING DISTANCE sits at the center, and the tray is where the keys land when the walk is done.

And finally, SATURDAY PAGES – a small page whose top edge is a market awning, with room beneath to write down what the morning turned up. Saturdays here fill a whole market on Main Street; somebody should be taking notes.
