Wild Tempo – a leather study in reptile and amphibian time
Wild Tempo – Volume I-C of the Shops studies. A September study.
Every animal keeps its own time. A giant tortoise may outlive the person who names her; a crocodile spends the whole afternoon saving up for one half-second. We pressed five of those private clocks into leather.
First, the tortoise, for the luggage tags. She carries her house on her back and has never once read a departures board, so above her stride the tag says ARRIVES WHEN IT ARRIVES – the most honest sentence ever attached to luggage.
The true black tag carries the design in gold.
Next, the crocodile, who floats like driftwood for hours and then moves all at once. The keychain says QUICK WHEN IT COUNTS, jaws open mid-surge – exactly the speed you want from your keys.
Then the python, wound across the golden tan catchall tray, with ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD curling along her outer coil toward the head at the center. Empty your pockets; she can wait.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
The two milk frogs took the toiletry bags: one sitting tall, one lying low, under the words ONE OF US KEEPS WATCH – the right arrangement for a bag that spends its nights beside unfamiliar sinks.
And finally, the tree frog for the journals, on deep green and pale sea-blue covers. Nothing gets past those eyes, so the corner of the cover says LOOK AGAIN – which is how every good field note begins.
