The Working Proof collection – leather for the drawing life
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.
A September study.
Volume I-C – a small leather collection for the drawing life, made for people who draw and print, and for the people who give them gifts.
First, we drew one unbroken line. It rises into hills, and at the far right it is still attached to the pencil that is drawing it – DRAWN FROM LIFE runs beneath. The line lies lengthwise along the luggage tag.
The black tag carries the line in gold.
On pale greige and on pale sea-blue the line goes in blind, like pencil on toned paper.
Next, the second every printmaker works for: the sheet comes up off the block, and the image is there. We held that instant on a die and set PULL ANOTHER beneath it – the workbench's honest cue to go again.
The keychains, in golden tan and warm gray, look just awesome.
The same press sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, warm gray over dark espresso.
Then, for the catchall tray, we drew an empty still-life table – cloth draped, subject missing. STILL LIFE stands beneath. Whatever lands in the tray at the end of the day completes the arrangement.
And finally, the one we liked the most. A print the artist is still re-evaluating is called a working proof, and ours says so plainly – registration ticks at the corners, one loose drawn-over correction across the plate. On a journal cover it makes the right promise: nothing inside has to be final.
It looks genuinely beautiful – charcoal black, and the warm cream of good drawing paper.
