Why the 4-inch line matters
A front trouser pocket is cut on a curve, narrowing toward the bottom. A wallet whose long edge exceeds the width of that curve cannot drop to the base of the pocket, so it sits high against the opening where the fabric is under the most tension. That is what produces the visible rectangle, and it is what makes a wallet work its way loose when you stand up from a car seat.
Below about 4 inches the wallet reaches the narrow part of the pocket and stays there. It also sits vertically rather than across the thigh, which puts the thickness in line with the leg instead of against it. The 8 × 10 cm card wallet is built to that shape.
Thickness matters more than footprint
Two wallets of identical dimensions carry very differently depending on how many leather layers they stack. Every card slot is a layer, and every fold doubles the whole panel. This is why a bifold reads as bulkier than a card wallet even though the closed footprints are only a centimetre or two apart – the bifold has a spine down the middle where two full thicknesses of leather meet.
Cash is the other variable. In a card wallet, banknotes fold a second time and land on top of the card stack. Choosing a size for how you dress
Fitted or tailored trousers
Go with the 8 × 10 cm card wallet. Tailored fabric has no slack to absorb a wallet outline, so the smaller footprint does the work. Four to six cards is the load that keeps it invisible.
Jeans and workwear
Either size works. Denim pockets are deeper and stiffer, so a 11.8 × 8.6 cm bifold drops in and stays put. This is where the extra cash capacity is worth having.
Suit jacket carry
