Stretching out is the failure version of the same process. It happens when the leather has no fibre structure left to resist with, so each load pushes it further and it never settles at a new shape. How to break one in without over-stretching it
Start under capacity
Carry four or five cards for the first fortnight even if you intend to carry ten. The leather sets around what is there. Starting light means the slots settle snug and then widen as you add, which is the sequence you want.
Never force a card in cold
If a card needs real pressure, work the slot open with a finger first or warm the leather in your hand. Forcing a stiff new slot tears fibres at the mouth of the pocket, and that is where a slack slot usually begins.
Empty it overnight once a week for the first month
Leather recovers a little when unloaded. An empty night lets the panel relax before it takes another set, which slows the whole process down and lands it in a better place.
Keep it dry through the break-in
Wet leather stretches easily and dries into whatever shape it was held in. A soaked card holder full of cards is the fastest way to a permanently loose one.
