The Garden Spot Collection – Bountiful, Utah, in leather

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies in leather.

An August study.

Bountiful, Utah, has carried a promise in its name since 1855, when the town on the old lake terraces was already called the garden spot of the territory. We spent August pressing that promise into leather, from luggage tags to a catchall tray. We call it the Garden Spot Collection.

First, the stamp that names it. We set BOUNTIFUL inside a wreath of orchard branches heavy with pears and cherries, with THE GARDEN SPOT and the year beneath – the town's own boast, drawn the way a seed catalog would have drawn it.

At full size it fills the catchall tray. It looks genuinely beautiful.

On the journals the wreath moves to the lower corner, pressed blind into blush and deep forest green – one for either side of the gift table.

Next, THE BENCH. Bountiful climbs the stepped shorelines that old Lake Bonneville left behind, and locals call the terraces the bench. We drew the steps and set a small house on the topmost one, with the sun going down over the lake.

On the toiletry bags it sits quietly in the corner of the stack – honeyed russet above, deep espresso brown below.

Then the whole geography in one line. A Wasatch peak stands at one end and the shimmer of the salt sea at the other, with an orchard row holding the bench between them. Each luggage tag wears the leather of its own stripe of country: deep green for the mountain and golden tan for the bench, then pale sea-blue for the water.

And finally, the local's password. Up North Canyon past Mueller Park stands a boulder shaped like an elephant, and every Bountiful kid can point to it. We gave it a portrait, trunk curled to the grass, with a pine for scale.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
