One More Turn – a leather collection for Provo, Utah

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

An August study.

ONE MORE TURN is a small leather collection for Provo, Utah – the valley drawn the way a toybox would draw it. Five stamps, pressed into luggage tags and their companions.

First, we rebuilt Bridal Veil Falls as a marble run. The water takes Provo Canyon in stages, so the marble does too – three beats down the rails and into the pool. We pressed it blind on a toybox trio of tags.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, the old name. Provo was the Garden City once, for its orchards, so we set a spinning top going and let the spin come up as orbits of orchard trees. It sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, warm tan over chestnut.

Then the namesake. A tin-toy wind-up key, a dashed quarter turn from ready, with ONE MORE TURN beneath – a key that rides with the keys. The black fob carries it in gold, as brass deserves; its red partner takes it blind.

Then we turned the whole valley into a board game across the base of the catchall tray. The path starts in Timpanogos snow and works down the canyon square by square, past a waterwheel and an orchard apple, until it comes home at Utah Lake. Keys and coins get to take the long way around every evening.

And finally, the journals. Timpanogos as a dot-to-dot, the first five lines already drawn, the rest waiting for a pencil – LINE BY LINE, which is how mountains and pages both get finished. One journal in deep pine green, one in pale greige.
