The One Road Collection – Springdale and Zion Canyon in leather

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

Springdale is a town one road wide, held between the walls of Zion Canyon and the North Fork of the Virgin River. This August we pressed that geography into leather – a small collection running from luggage tags to journals, made for anyone carrying the canyon home.

First, the town as the canyon holds it. Two sandstone walls close in from either side, and SPRINGDALE runs letter by letter down the slot of sky between them, single file, the way the town actually lives – the river crossing beneath.

We ran the trio in honeyed russet and pale warm greige, the two tones of the canyon walls. The black tag carries the design in gold. It looks genuinely beautiful stamped into the leather.

Next, the peak standing guard at the canyon gate. We cut the Watchman in solid strata under a sliver of moon and pressed it small on the toiletry bags – honeyed russet over deep espresso, sandstone over shadow.

The same mountain runs at full size across the golden tan catchall tray, so the last thing your keys see at night is the one on watch.

Then, the botany. Springdale grows a famous berry that no field guide has ever admitted to, so we drew the plate ourselves – FIG 1, the giggle bush, rendered with a perfectly straight face.

On the keychains, deep pine green for the leaf and dusty rose for the berry. They look just awesome in the hand.

And finally, the one we liked the most. The Virgin River is a modest stream that has spent a few million years writing the deepest pages in Utah, one oxbow at a time. On a journal cover the nib takes over mid-sentence – THE RIVER WROTE THIS, the current flowing straight off the pen.
