The Ravine Runs Under It – a Clintonville leather collection

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

A leather collection for Clintonville, the streetcar suburb with a secret – whole ravines running green under its everyday streets. Five designs, five dies, pressed into everything from luggage tags to a catchall tray.

First, we printed a fare. A luggage tag already has a ticket's proportions, so we drew it as one – an old streetcar transfer that says CLINTONVILLE and GOOD FOR ONE FARE, with the conductor's star punched at the far end.

It runs lengthwise across the trio; fuchsia and pale sea-blue take it blind. The black tag carries the fare in gold foil – a golden ticket.

Next, the title piece, for the journals. We set a row of rooftops on a straight street line and hung the whole woods beneath it, a white creek winding through the black – THE RAVINE RUNS UNDER IT.

It sits in the lower corner of the front panel, on deep green and on warm tan. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then the keychains. The neighborhood's most famous commuter is an orange cat with a civic title, so we drew the walk itself – mid-stride along a branch, tail up like a flag – and set the office underneath: MAYOR OF THE RAVINE.

Then we cut the Park of Roses the way a paper cutter would – a spiral of solid petals inside a bold ring, PARK OF ROSES along the lower arc. A rose with graphic conviction, pressed into the corner of the toiletry bags, warm gray over chestnut.

And finally, the one we liked the most. The amusement park by the river is long gone, so we set a carousel horse mid-gallop under a scalloped crown with OLENTANGY PARK arched above, and wrote our verdict beneath: THE RIDE GOES ON.

Pressed into the middle of the golden tan catchall tray, where the day's pocketful comes to rest. It looks genuinely beautiful.
