The Hay Camp Collection – Rapid City pressed in leather
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.
An August study.
Rapid City sits on the line where the open prairie gives way to the pine-dark Hills. We pressed that line into leather – the Hay Camp Collection, from luggage tags to journals.
First, WEST RIVER – what locals call everything on this side of the Missouri. The design is one long horizon: flat in the grass at one end, climbing into pine ridge at the other, the way the land does on the drive in. It runs lengthwise along the tag.
On golden tan and deep pine green the stamp is a blind deboss; the black tag carries it in gold.
Next, HAY CAMP – the name Rapid City answered to in 1876, when the town was a hay meadow and a handful of tents beside the creek. We arched the old name over a haystack and set the date beneath it.
It fills the golden tan tray at full size, and sits low in the corner of the journals – warm tan and deep espresso.
Then, RAPID CREEK – the water the whole town is named for. One meander line runs between the two words. The duo pairs pale sea-blue with deep pine green, the creek and the country it comes out of.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
And finally, THE GAP – the notch in the ridge where the creek slips out of the Hills and downtown begins. Two dark shoulders, the water passing between them. It stamps the lower corner of the toiletry bags, honeyed russet stacked over deep espresso.
