The Two-Bit Street Collection – leather stamps for Historic 25th Street, Ogden

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

The Two-Bit Street Collection – three original stamps for Historic 25th Street in Ogden, Utah, pressed into leather from luggage tags to journals.

First, the motto. Ogden grew where the transcontinental lines crossed – the town they called Junction City – and its old chamber put the fact plainly: "You can't get anywhere without coming to Ogden." We set the sentence on its own rail, three tracks sweeping in and merging into the single line the words ride, and pressed it onto luggage tags, where a claim like that belongs.

The trio runs deep wine for Union Station brick and warm tan for the canyon country. The black tag carries the motto in gold.

Next, the street's older name. Before anyone called it Historic, 25th Street was Two-Bit Street, and two bits is twenty-five cents. So we struck the coin – a big 25 at the center, TWO BIT STREET around the rim, a reeded edge like a milled quarter.

A coin belongs in a pocket, so the keychains came first. On the black fob it is struck in gold.

The same coin sits small in the corner of the toiletry bags, honeyed russet stacked over dark espresso – old brick over rail-tie brown.

And finally, the view. Stand on 25th Street and look east: the storefronts frame a straight shot from Union Station to the Wasatch, and the mountains close the street like a curtain. We cut that sightline into a stamp and set the city's own phrase beneath it – "Notoriously Independent."

Pressed at generous size into the golden tan of the catchall tray, it looks genuinely beautiful.

And in the corner of the journals – one in deep pine green, one in pale rose – because notoriously independent is exactly what a blank page should be.
