The Village in the City – a Hillcrest, Little Rock leather collection
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.
An August study.
Hillcrest calls itself a small village in the heart of Little Rock, and we took the claim at its word. THE VILLAGE IN THE CITY is a leather collection cut from the neighborhood's own geography, from the bend of Kavanaugh Boulevard down to the modest river rock that named the city.
First, the boulevard. We drew Kavanaugh the way the old streetcar knew it – one long curve crossed with track ties, bending with the hill all the way up – and set THE LONG WAY HOME beneath the line.
It looks genuinely beautiful on the luggage tags. Forest green carries the canopy and caramel the bungalow wood. The black tag takes the stamp in gold.
Next, the trail that drops off the boulevard into Allsopp Park. A single path folds through four hairpins between the pines, and we pressed it small into the corner of the toiletry bags – honeyed russet over deep espresso.
Then, the rock. Little Rock takes its name from a small stone on the Arkansas River that travelers steered by – a landmark whose usefulness outran its size. We arched THE USEFUL ROCK over the water and gave it to the keychains, one navy and one golden tan.
The same mark sits at the center of a golden tan catchall tray, where a useful rock can keep holding small useful things.
And finally, the porch light. We hung a lantern under a Craftsman gable and wrote the welcome out plainly: THE PORCH LIGHT IS ON. It goes into the corner of the journals, one caramel and one black – on the black cover the unfoiled stamp reads as quiet shadow relief.
