Woody's Mercantile × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies in leather.

An August study.

For Woody's Mercantile.

Five stamps, one shelf – we call it the Shire Town Collection.

First, the luggage tags. Every Vermonter has delivered the old verdict to a lost traveler, so we hung YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE on a roadside signpost and let the bottom arrow curl all the way back into the post. Forest green for the hills, caramel for the old store leather.

The black tag carries the stamp in gold foil.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, we set a sugarhouse at first boil, steam pouring from the cupola – for the one bag that spends its whole working life in steam. Pressed low in the corner, honeyed russet over dark espresso.

Then the river. OTTAUQUECHEE, the whole twelve-letter mouthful, arched beneath a covered bridge and its water. Navy for the river, caramel for the valley.

After that, the catchall tray. The Green began as triangular common pasture, the one spot where the whole village gathered – which is a catchall's exact job description. We fenced the triangle in split rails and let two sheep keep the grass down.

And finally, the one we liked the most. STICK SEASON – a sugar maple stripped to its branches, for the quiet weeks after the leaves and the visitors have gone and there is finally time to write. Bare-branch gray beside wet-bark espresso.
